Close-up of a Prime-Jim Blackberry plant.

Yes, it's mid-summer and plants are fruiting and flowering with abandon. However, that doesn't mean it's too late to get a few fruiting plants into the ground. You can also try a large pot or two for fruits this season. The trick is to choose varieties that fruit more than once a season, and love the high heat of summer. Check out your local garden center. If these are not available, ask them for a suitable substitute. One that produces more than one crop in a growing season.

Here are 5 that are easy to grow, fruit on steroids until early fall, and produce epic crops throughout the season. Have you grown any of these? Tell us more in comments below.

Prime-Jim® Blackberry

Grows much like the other erect cultivars. However the canes that emerge in the spring will flower in mid-summer and fruit in late summer or fall. Offers an extended harvest from mid-June through to frost. Zone: 4 – 8

Perpetua® Blueberry

Perpetua® Blueberry

Produces two crops of delicious blueberries! The first fruit will appear after the spring bloom in midsummer. Then it re-blooms in summer, providing a late season crop in the fall. Zone: 4 – 8

Fall Gold Raspberry

Fall Gold Raspberry

Self-fertile, deliciously sweet gold raspberry produces two crops each season. After a late summer to fall harvest, a second crop arrives the following spring on the same canes. Zone: 3 – 8

Indian Summer Raspberry

Indian Summer Raspberry

This ever-bearing selection produces a small crop of large tasty berries in late spring to early summer. Plus an even larger crop in early fall. Adapts well to heavier soils and produces vigorous, rambling canes. Zone: 4 – 9

Seascape Strawberry

 Seascape Strawberry

Day-neutral or everbearing strawberries (which this one is) don’t send out many runners and instead are busy putting their energy into producing multiple harvests right into fall. Zone: 4 – 9 More here about growing strawberries!
