Hi Donna--let's take each of these separately! --fall is the best time for transplanting as long as you've not had a killing or hard frost. The sooner the better. --as for bloom, it could be that the variety you have is an early season bloomer! That said, no matter the variety, we always recommend cutting back by 1/3 after the plant has finished flowering. This encourages air circulation, new stems, and more flowers. --these are not hungry plants. A dose of fertilizer for flowering plants (the middle number will be higher) in the spring and right after the first flush of blooms should be enough. Hope this helps.

I think you'll find lots of choices at your local garden center. Here are a few to consider: Redbud, Pagoda Dogwood, American hazelnut, highbush cranberry viburnum, American hornbeam (my favorite!)
